After the Peace Agreement: What Next for Colombia?

Co-sponsored by the Norwegian Centre for Conflict Resolution (NOREF) and the Social Development Group

Since the Colombian Congress' approval of a revised peace agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in November 2016, aspects of accord implementation are underway. By early February, the FARC is to have completed moving its fighters into designated zones around the country, with disarmament and demobilization to take place over the next several months under U.N. supervision. The implementing legislation for mechanisms of transitional justice is currently being debated in the Congress, and other programs, from coca eradication to assistance to victims are ramping up. Meanwhile, Colombian public opinion about the peace process remains polarized, with dissent deepening in advance of the country's 2018 presidential elections.

Please join us to reflect on the challenges and priorities of peace accord implementation, the role of the international community, and the internal political issues that impact Colombia's peace process. Special attention will be devoted to security issues, including the demobilization of combatants and the fight against violent armed actors in Colombia's illegal economies.
