Tunisia will become the sixth Arab country (sixteenth overall) to receive this designation following Morocco, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait and Jordan. While the designation seeks to elevate the country’s significance as a regional ally, there are interesting questions about what the designation may mean practically for Tunisia.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee is holding a hearing on June 17, 2015 on U.S. Policy and Strategy in the Middle East and in preparation for the hearing, Security Assistance Monitor has created an inforgraphic to illustrate the significant increase in assistance to the region in the last few years.

According to the publicly available data, the administration is requesting approximately $18.7 billion in security assistance globally for FY 2016, which includes $8.3 billion in State Department-funded programs. That leaves an estimated $10.4 billion in Defense Department-funded programs where publicly available information is scant at best.

As President Obama prepares to discuss U.S.-Tunisia security cooperation to combat extremism on Thursday with President Beji Caid Essebsi at the White House, Obama will surely highlight his proposed increased U.S. military aid to Tunisia. For FY 2016, the U.S. plans to allocate $99 million in security assistance to Tunisia, which is a three-fold increase over FY 2014.
