The number of U.S. foreign military trainees increased substantially from 79,865 trainees in FY 2015 to 128,280 trainees in FY 2016, according to the State Department’s recent U.S. “Foreign Military Training” reports.

The State Department requested Congress to approve over $662 million worth of commercial firearms sales to 36 countries in 2015-2016, including some countries that have come under scrutiny for their potential or alleged misuse of U.S. weapons.

The annual Foreign Military Training Report, recently released by the U.S. State and Defense Departments, reports on “all military training provided to foreign military personnel.” This report is a vital tool to better understanding U.S. efforts in building the partner capacity for foreign militaries. This year’s report highlights the trainings that occurred in 2014.

Looking at the timeline of arrests, extraditions and deals in recent months, it looks like the United States was moving to make the case against El Chapo completely airtight, allowing Mexico to detain him until U.S. officials were completely ready to make the official extradition request.
